The incidence of liver cancer has more than tripled since 1980. About 42,220 new cases will be diagnosed in 2018, and about 30,200 people will die of this cancer. Risk factors for primary liver cancer (cancer starting in the liver) include having hepatitis B or C, heavy alcohol use, cirrhosis, hemochromatosis, obesity or diabetes. There are different types of treatment for patients with primary liver cancer, and health care professionals need to know about new and current treatment regimens, as well as when to refer.
