January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.
According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 13,170 new cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed in 2019, and an estimated 4,250 women will die from it. In August 2018, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) published its final recommendation statement on cervical cancer screening in average-risk women. Recommendations include discussion of the role of screening with human papillomavirus (HPV) testing alone, updates on the efficacy of the HPV vaccine, and revised guidelines on cancer screening in HIV-positive women. Physicians should be aware of revised guidelines to be able to implement them in practice.
