What is the problem
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is violence or aggression that occurs in a close relationship, varying in frequency and severity. IPV has lasting impacts on the health and well-being of the entire family involved. The four types of intimate partner violence include physical violence, sexual violence, stalking, and psychological aggression. IPV is prevalent- about 1 in 4 women and nearly 1 in 10 men have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, and stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime. Over 43 million women and 38 million men experienced psychological aggression by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Victims of IPV are frequent users of health services, yet they are frequently unrecognized. In 2013, the US Preventive Services Task Force updated their recommendation statement on screening for intimate partner violence to recommend clinicians screen women of childbearing age. Healthcare providers need to know about strategies for identifying intimate partner violence, screening during periodic health exams, and case finding in patients with suggestive signs or symptoms.
